Man Tried To Cash Forged $245,000 Check: Garden City Police

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending July 6.

June 30

  • Police and firefighters responded to Cedar Place for a transformer fire. Firefighters safeguarded area and PSEG was notified for repairs.
  • Police and firefighters responded to Parking Field 7N where firefighters extinguished a garbage can fire.
  • Garden City detectives arrested a 25-year-old man for forging the check of another person and cashing it for $4,900. He was charged with identity theft and grand larceny.

July 1

  • Police and firefighters responded to Nassau County Police headquarters for a report of smoke inside the building. Firefighters determined the cause to be a burnt HVAC motor.
  • A resident received a phone call from a person claiming to be from PSEG. The caller advised the resident he had a large outstanding bill, and his electric service would be turned off if did not pay it off with gift cards. The resident complied; it was later determined to be a scam.
  • As a result of a traffic investigation on Franklin Avenue, a driver was charged with driving with a suspended license, and unsafe lane changing.

July 2

  • A vehicle traveling north struck the Cherry Valley Overpass. The driver was charged with disregarding bridge clearance signs.
  • Officers arrested a 41-year-old male for attempting to deposit a forged $245,000 check at TD Bank. The investigation is ongoing.
  • A person’s identity was used without authorization to file false unemployment claims.
  • An unlicensed motorist was charged with driving at an excessive rate of speed on Rockaway Avenue.
  • A resident was issued an appearance ticket after his dog left his home and bit a postal carrier. The carrier was transported to a local urgent care by his supervisor.
  • A wallet was reported lost or stolen from inside a Franklin Avenue office building.

July 3

  • Officers arrested a 59-year-old man on Cambridge Avenue for DWI and passing multiple stop signs.

July 4

  • Special Police Officers were assigned to a traffic control detail on Stewart Avenue at New Hyde Park Road due to the Stewart Manor July 4th Fire Department Parade.
  • Firefighters assisted the police department in the extrication of a semiconscious driver involved in a one-vehicle accident on Washington Avenue. NYU transported the driver to a local hospital.
  • A driver was charged with driving with a suspended license on Clinton Road and excessive speed.
  • Officers investigated a report of youths throwing eggs at cars on Edgemere Road.
  • Upon investigation of a vehicle stopped and impeding traffic on Washington Avenue, Officers arrested a 21-year-old man for aggravated DWI (more than .18 percent BAC).

July 5

  • A driver on Clinton Road and another driver on Rockaway Avenue were both charged with driving with a suspended license, suspended registration and improper license plates.
  • As a result of a traffic stop investigation on 9th Street, Officers arrested a 23-year-old female for DWI and driving without her vehicle’s headlights activated.

July 6

  • As a result of a strong evening thunderstorm, officers responded to numerous calls for downed tree limbs, an alarm, and a traffic light malfunction.
  • A flatbed truck traveling northbound on Cherry Valley Avenue struck the overpass with a construction machine it was carrying. The driver was charged with unlicensed operation and disregarding bridge clearance signs.
