Woman Stabbed Dog After It Bit Her Infant Son: Police

One of the most-read stories of the year was about a woman from Hempstead who allegedly stabbed a dog after it bit her infant son. Readers were divided over whether or not the woman should have been charged by police with a crime.

Nassau Community College Professor's 'I Sit With Kaepernick' Shirt Causes Stir Online

Another popular story of the year was the controversy surrounding NCC professor Porter Kirkwood, who wore a shirt reading "I Sit With Kaapernick" to school on Sept. 11. It caused quite a stir, with people arguing whether or not he should have worn the shirt in the first place.

Woman Rear-Ends Police Car, Gets Arrested For DWI

According to Nassau police, Katie Kirk, 21, of Bay Shore, rear-ended a Nassau County Police Department patrol car with her 2013 Jeep Wrangler on Oak Street, at the entrance to Hofstra University in Uniondale, at 3:45 a.m. on March 1. The patrol car was occupied by two police officers. The officers were transported to a local hospital for treatment of neck and back injuries.

Massive Heroin Ring Dismantled; 14 People Indicted

On May 5, Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced the indictment of 14 people — including a former NYPD narcotics detective — for their alleged roles in a massive heroin ring that sold thousands of dollars worth of drugs every day to people in Nassau, Queens and the Bronx. The takedown, called Operation Tri-County Traffick, came a month after law enforcement officials arrested 40 people who were trafficking drugs on Route 110. According to Singas, the ring was allegedly selling more than 23,000 doses of heroin a week — which allegedly earned them about $170,000 each week. The ring allegedly pumped out about a million doses of heroin a year.

Man Robbed Nassau Pharmacy At Knifepoint

In July, police began the search for a man who brazenly robbed a pharmacy at knifepoint in the middle of the day. According to police, the man entered Twin Parks Pharmacy, located at 2226 Jericho Turnpike in Garden City Park, at 11:15 a.m. He approached the pharmacist, pulled out a knife and demanded OxyContin. The pharmacist complied and the man fled the store with an undetermined amount of prescription pills. There was one other employee in the store at the time and no customers. No one was injured.
