The Gift of Life: Blood Drives This Month

January is National Blood Donor Month.

For more than 40 years, January has been recognized as National Blood Donor Month. Here's a schedule of blood drives taking place Jan. 17-30:

  • Jan. 29: Nassau Community College, in conjunction with Nassau University Medical Center, will host its 19th annual mid-winter blood drive in the multipurpose room of the College Center Building on campus; 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Call Barbara Vollmer at 572-7883 or Dr. Friedman at 572-7401 to make an appointment or just stop in on Jan. 29.
  • Jan. 30: Garden City Public Library in the large meeting room on the lower level; 1:45 – 7:45 p.m. Call 742-8405 x210 to schedule an appointment. Walk-ins are also welcome.
Eligible donors must be between 16 and 75 years of age, with a minimum weight of 110 lbs., and no tattoos within the past 12 months. Sixteen year olds must have parental permission and donors age 76 and over must present a doctor’s note. All donors must have valid ID with signature or photo. Donors are encouraged to eat well (low fat) and drink fluids. For medical questions concerning blood donations, call 1-800-688-0900.
