Fatal Garden City Fire Likely Caused By Cigarette: Report

The Fire Marshal is still investigating, but so far has deemed the fire that killed the Madigan family accidental.

The fatal house fire that killed three members of the Madigan family was likely caused by a cigarette and doesn't seem suspicious, the Nassau County Fire Marshal's office has said.

GARDEN CITY, NY — According to reports, investigators have determined that the Garden City house fire that claimed the lives of three family members earlier this month was likely caused by a cigarette.

According to Newsday, the Nassau County Fire Marshal's investigation into the blaze found that it was accidental, and most likely started by someone smoking a cigarette on the first floor of the home. The investigation is still ongoing.

The fire began around 5:30 a.m. on May 6 and quickly engulfed the majority of the home. The blaze killed 18-year-old Molly Madigan, and her parents Joseph and Gail. Molly had recently been accepted to the NYU Steinhardt School of Music, which she was planning to attend in the fall.
