GARDEN CITY, NY — Garden City Middle School students Maddie Mitchell and Elsie Ross used their creativity to make a difference this holiday season. Through sales of handmade decorations, they were able to provide donations to charities that help those less fortunate.

Maddie and Elsie painted ornaments, which they sold in November to benefit Americares, an organization that provides health resources to people affected by poverty or disaster. Their efforts yielded a $226 donation, which was multiplied by eight through a Giving Tuesday match opportunity. They made this contribution in Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kusum Sinha’s name as a way to thank the district’s administrators, teachers and staff members for making it possible to keep school open.

The two students also donated $180 to the Alford Family’s annual Thanksgiving meal project for homebound senior citizens. They raised these funds through the sale of miniature holiday wreaths that they made using a craft kit that was a gift from Elsie’s aunt.
