GARDEN CITY, NY — The Village of Garden City announced that it is planning to open its pool on June 12.

According to Recreation Commissioner Paul Blake, the Nassau County Department of Health changed its coronavirus guidelines for pools this summer, lifting the 50 percent occupancy cap.

With the facility’s large deck, picnic and grass areas, and snack bar, the pool can accommodate its normal capacity of more than 1,300 patrons and still allow residents to socially distance.

“So right now, unless we hear something different in the next two weeks, the plan is to open the pool on time,” Blake said.

Things will not be completely back to normal, though. There will be no swim lessons this year, as the village said it puts instructors at risk to work that closely with children. Additionally, the swim team will not be competing this season because most other nearby pools are not competing.

“We have tons of residents who are looking forward to coming to the pool," said Blake. "To just walk down there with their pass and not have to make a reservation — that’s going to be real normal for the folks in the village, so we plan on going full tilt."
