GARDEN CITY, NY — A group of small businesses in Garden City will participate in a week-long shop local initiative to encourage local shopping during the coronavirus pandemic. The "Shop 516"campaign kicks off Saturday.

Organizer Joe Cianciotto says the effort is a mix between a restaurant week and a small business Saturday event, but virtual. Cianciotto is a lifelong Garden City resident who runs a branding and communications company.

"This initiative grew out of our community fundraising initiative on Facebook we put together to donate face shields to first responders. Having mobilized, we set out to give back to the community by creating a reason for our community to come together and support our local businesses with our wallets. The initiative is built on completely donated time from me and my small team of residents and completely free."
