"13: The Musical" follows the story of Evan Goldman, a teen who moves from New York City to small-town Indiana. In the process, he has to deal with his upcoming Bar Mitzvah, his parents' divorce and his new social standing at school. When it opened on Broadway in 2008, it was the only musical to have a cast and band made up entirely of teenagers.

Islam's character is a new addition for the film. The Netflix movie will star Debra Messing as Evan's mother, which is also a new addition.
