GC Girls Lax Defeats Syosset
Garden City rode an 8 goal first half, highlighted by 2 goals in the last minute, to defeat Syosset 10-6.
The Garden City girl’s lacrosse program has had a rich winning history but after three games this year it looked like they might be in a rebuilding year. Well, never count out a winning program, especially when you have a head coach like Dave Ettinger and assistants Janet Rogler and Gina Leake. They quickly got the team to feel confident in their game, never let up on an opponent, and play every second of every match like it’s your last.
With a revitalized spirit the girls have run off five consecutive wins, the latest being a 10-6 victory over Syosset on Senior Day in their last regular season game at GCHS.
The game featured the usual fast scoring offense, led by Sydney Pappas’ four goals (and an assist) to go along with two goals each from Carla Curth and Alex Hopkins. But it’s not only about scoring the goals, but it’s also about setting them up with accurate passing. Seeing the field and coming up with those assists were Angie Suau (2 assists), Meghan Rode (goal and an assist), and Olivia Kaval (an assist), and Caitlin McNaboe chipped in with a goal. The most exciting offensive plays came in the last minute of the first half as GC scored twice to open a six-goal lead after Syosset closed to within four.

Defensively, the Lady Trojans have employed an aggressive defense that is quick to double team and force turnovers or move their opponent to their weak side, limiting the opportunity for shots. Hopkins, McNaboe and Suau played terrific two-way games, while the defense was solid with Ashley Larson, Lisa Garizio, Lizzanne Griffith and Juliana Santel contributing greatly to the victory. And not to be left out, senior midfielder Maddy O’Connor was once again solid on the draw to ignite the GC offense.
When an opponent does break through, GC goalie Amanda Grimes has been up to the task. Against Syosset, Grimes came up with 7 saves.
