Geese Injured In Hit-And-Run: Garden City Police

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending June 1.

May 26

  • Officers responded to Washington Avenue where a contractor’s truck leaked hydraulic fluid onto the roadway, causing a hazardous condition. Upon investigation, multiple equipment tickets were issued to the company.
  • A victim’s identity was used to open an unauthorized credit card account.
  • A victim reported multiple fraudulent checks were written against his bank account.
  • Officers conducted a Buckle-Up NY initiative on Clinton Road. Thirty-three tickets were issued including 21 seatbelt violations and 11 other traffic violations. One driver was charged with driving with a suspended license.

  • Officers responded to multiple traffic light malfunctions on Stewart Avenue, Washington Avenue, and 11th Street.

May 28

  • Officers conducted a Buckle-Up NY initiative on New Hyde Park Road. Eighteen tickets were issued including 17 seatbelt violations and one uninsured operation violation.
  • Officers responded to multiple traffic light malfunctions on Clinton Road.

  • Officers were assigned to traffic and safety details for a Memorial Day ceremony on Rainbow Place.
  • Officers investigated a report of a man fleeing CVS after stealing multiple items from the store.
  • Officers assigned to Buckle Up New York enforcement details issued five tickets for not wearing seatbelts as well as 13 tickets for other traffic violations including two for unlicensed operation.

May 30

  • Officers investigated a report of a vehicle leaving the scene after possibly striking multiple geese on Rockaway Avenue. The agency Volunteers for Wildlife picked up one injured goose from a resident and received a second injured goose from another resident. The geese’s injuries appear to be non-life threatening. The DEC was notified of the incident.
  • Officers responded to St. Anne’s Church for a suspicious unattended backpack found near the main entrance to the building. Upon investigation, officers determined the backpack and contents to be non-threatening.
  • Police and firefighters responded to a 7th Street building for a fire alarm. Upon investigation, firefighters determined the cause was a substantial water leak. The area was safeguarded until it could be repaired.

May 31

  • A vehicle was reported stolen from Carteret Place. It was traced to a location in Newark, New Jersey. Garden City detectives notified Newark police and the vehicle was recovered. The investigation is ongoing.
  • Officers conducted traffic and safety details for a Memorial Day ceremony held on 7th Street.
  • Police and firefighters responded to a residence for a carbon monoxide alarm activation. Upon investigation, firefighters determined all was in order.
  • Police and firefighters responded to a Franklin Avenue building for a fire alarm activation. Firefighters determined the cause to be burnt food.

June 1

  • At 2 a.m., workers reported a man fled the scene after being seen inside a closed Franklin Avenue medical building without permission. Upon a search of the area, officers apprehended the man on Meadow Street. He was arrested and charged with criminal trespassing.
  • Tools were reported stolen from a village truck parked in Community Park.
