Girls Soccer Playoffs - Garden City Defeats Wantagh
The Garden City girls soccer team advances to the semi finals with a 3-1 victory over number 5 seed Wantagh.
In the shortened playoff season this year its important to get hot, despite wind chill temperatures, at the right time. The fourth seeded Lady Trojans have shown good resilience this season and look to be hitting their stride at the right time. Playing against a difficult opponent that they had defeated twice this season in Wantagh, the GC girls knew they had to fire on all cylinders as it is always difficult to beat a team three times.
As most playoff games go, even when you know your opponent as well as these teams know each other, it took some time for the scoring chances to come. Wantagh took advantage of a turnover in the midfield as Madison Taylor took the ball and quickly fired a shot that found the back of the net for a 1-0 Wantagh lead with about twelve minutes left in the half.
Garden City didn't let down after the goal and fought back to get into position to force a turnover of their own only five minutes later. The turnover put freshman Emily Romeo in a one on one situation with the Wantagh keeper. And Emily adeptly moved around Isabella Astazia and fired the ball into the open net to tie the score at one.

Fired up and controlling the ball, the GC girls worked the ball through the midfield and were able to draw a foul that resulted in a free kick for the ever dangerous Kelly Brennan. And Brennan delivered with a rocket that cut through the wind and hit the back of the net over the outstretched arms of Astazia. Garden City had a 2-1 lead with a little over three minutes left in the half.
The second half was highlighted by an early insurance goal in the sixth minute of play. Isabella Vona carried the ball down the sideline and fired a ball towards the goal that handcuffed the keeper and made its way into the back of the net as Emily Romeo followed it into the net.

Garden City tightened up their defense the rest of the way and now move on to a semi final match against number 1 seed MacArthur on Monday evening.
