Hempstead Man Charged With Murder For 2020 Shooting: Police

A 22-year-old man was killed last year in a drive-by shooting, and another was injured. Police arrested 18-year-old Denis Gutierrez-Marcos.

HEMPSTEAD, NY — An 18-year-old Hempstead man was charged with murder for a 2020 shooting that left one person dead and another injured.

Hempstead Village police officers responded to a call to 43 High Street at 3:55 a.m. on Sept. 6, 2020 for a report of people shot by someone from a car. When the officers arrived, they found a 24-year-old man and a 22-year-old man who had both been shot.

Both men were taken to the hospital. The 24-year-old was treated and survived. The 22-year-old, who police identified as Edwin Guerrero, of Hempstead, died from his injuries.

On Thursday, Nassau County police arrested Denis Gutierrez-Marcos, 18, of Thorne Avenue, Hempstead in connection with the shooting. He is charged with second-degree murder.

Additionally, Gutierrez-Marcos is also charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, first-degree criminal use of a firearm, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree assault and fourth-degree possession of a dangerous weapon for two other incidents.

He is scheduled to be arraigned later today.
