CandyStore, an online candy retailer, found each state's favorite Halloween candy by combing through 11 years of sales data.

LONG ISLAND, NY — Experienced trick-or-treaters know certain houses just have better candy than others in the neighborhood. These pros also know that certain houses give out apples and Good & Plenty for some inexplicable reason. Homeowners eager to please costumed youngins can be prepared as a recent study found the most popular Halloween candy in every state.

CandyStore, an online candy retailer, found each state’s favorite Halloween candy by combing through 11 years of sales data, and focusing on the months leading up to the holiday.

The company also verified the conclusions with major candy manufacturers and distributors, and presented the information of each state’s three favorite Halloween candies and how many pounds of the tasty treats were sold last year.

The most popular Halloween candy in New York in 2018 was Sour Patch Kids, which sold over 203,000 pounds. Candy Corn ranked second, selling more than 100,000 pounds and Hot Tamales ranked third at about 49,000 pounds.

Skittles was the most popular Halloween candy across the country, with the ever-beloved M&M’s, Snickers, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Starburst rounding out the top five.

While the above candies dominated a large section of the country, Jolly Ranchers made a surprise appearance as the favorite treat in Arizona, Georgia, and Utah.

Ninety-five percent of the 179 million Americans who celebrate Halloween will purchase candy for the holiday, according to the study. On average, they will spend $27, and nearly 25 percent of all those purchases are made online.
