Hofstra University Featured As 'Jeopardy' Clue: WATCH
Hofstra University in Hempstead made a surprise appearance on the game show "Jeopardy!"

HEMPSTEAD, NY — Hofstra University, the largest private university on Long Island, made a surprise appearance on the game show "Jeopardy!"
The university on Monday posted a video clip on Facebook showing longtime host, Alex Trebek, giving contestants a $1,000 clue involving William Hofstra and his second wife, Kate, who were benefactors of the institution. The school's mascots are named after the couple.
In the clip, Trebek reads: "The opulent home of William and Kate Hofsta is now the centerpiece of a private university on this island."

The answer, of course, was Long Island.
The university wrote on its website that neither William nor Kate likely envisioned their names emblazoned on the university while they were alive. William died in 1932, leaving the bulk of his estate to his wife.

Kate died the following year, and indicated in her will that the remaining estate should be used to create a memorial to her husband. A year later, trustees of the estate came up with the idea of creating an institution of higher education to fulfill that wish. The Hofstra home, known as The Netherlands, is now the centerpiece of the campus.
"Their likeness hangs in the administration building, and their family name lives on," the university said.
The Hofstra campus now houses about 4,000 students and enrolls more than 8,000 full-time across 240 acres. The site is a registered member of the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta.
