GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending April 6.

March 31

  • An officer on patrol discovered a window to a vacant Franklin Avenue building was damaged.

April 1

  • A truck traveling southbound struck the Cherry Valley overpass. The truck sustained substantial damage. The driver was charged with disregarding bridge clearance signs. MTA personnel responded to inspect the bridge and remove debris from the tracks.

April 2

  • Garden City police assisted Nassau County police with a serious auto accident involving an ambulance on Old Country Road.
  • A driver was charged with driving on Cathedral Avenue with a suspended license and excessive speed.
  • A tractor trailer traveling southbound struck the Cherry Valley overpass causing its rear container to fall onto the roadway and lean upright against the bridge. MTA inspectors and work crews responded to clear the area and safeguard the bridge. The driver was charged with disregarding bridge clearance signs.

April 3

  • Police are investigating a report of a gray car backing into and damaging another vehicle on Clinton Road.
  • Police placed safety cones on Chestnut Street for a missing stop sign. DPW responded to the scene to replace the sign.
  • A Garden City police dispatcher received a call for a woman possibly being assaulted. With the assistance of the department’s language interpreter service, it was determined the incident occurred in Roosevelt. Nassau County police were then notified and responded to the scene.

April 4

  • A Garden City auto repair station reported an owner took his car from their lot without paying for agreed upon parts and repairs.
  • Garden City police and firefighters responded to a residence for a fire alarm activation. Upon investigation, the cause of the alarm was determined to be burnt food.

April 5

  • Officers arrested a 28-year-old driver on Washington Avenue for an outstanding Nassau County traffic warrant as well as driving with a suspended license, missing license plate, and defective brake lights.

April 6

  • Garden City police and firefighters responded to Rockaway Avenue for an odor of gas. Upon investigation, firefighters determined the area to be safe.
  • A driver was charged with driving on 11th Street with a suspended license and improper plates. Another driver was charged with driving on St. James Street South with a suspended license and a suspended vehicle registration.
  • Police investigated a report of a victim’s identity being used to open an unauthorized insurance policy.
