Nassau Coronavirus Cases By Community: Hundreds Of Daily Cases

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — With the holiday season in full swing, coronavirus cases in Nassau County continue to climb. Hundreds of new cases are being confirmed every day at levels reminiscent of late March.

Since the first confirmed case in Nassau County March 5, 65,642 residents have contracted the coronavirus and 2,269 people have died, according to county statistics. As of Sunday, 4,470 Nassau residents have tested positive for the virus this month and 13 have died.

The virus continues to spread around the county. There are now 13 communities that have reported more than 1,000 cases of the virus. Hempstead, the hardest-hit community in Nassau, has reported more than 3,000 cases.

According to Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, the county's seven-day positive test rate is 4.8 percent.

"At the moment hospital capacity is not a pressing threat in Nassau County, but the trend is heading in the wrong direction," Curran said. "To save lives and prevent further restrictions on restaurants and other businesses, we must do everything we can to hold the line."

Curran said as of Sunday, there were 337 people in Nassau hospitals due to COVID-19 and 32 of them were on ventilators.

"I’ve been in constant conversation with hospital executives to ensure preparedness for a potential surge in hospitalization, as well as the upcoming pivot to vaccine storage and distribution," Curran said. "As we manage the increase in cases due to the cold weather, the county will do everything in its power to keep schools open. As county executive, I’ve made keeping schools open one of my highest priorities. Robust testing is key to keeping schools open, and the county will continue to do all it can to ensure school districts can meet the state’s testing guidelines."
