Truck Driver Fled Scene After Hitting Overpass: Garden City PD

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending June 15.
June 9
- Police and firefighters responded to Nassau Boulevard for a possible gas leak. Upon investigation, firefighters deemed the area safe.
- Officers investigated a report of a fallen tree branch which struck and damaged a vehicle parked on Stratford Avenue.
- A resident received a call from a person claiming to be a DEA agent who stated the resident’s bank assets will be frozen due to an investigation. The resident realized it was a scam when the caller instructed her to wire money to an account to stop the process.
- A truck traveling northbound on Cherry Valley Avenue struck the train overpass. The driver was charged with disregarding bridge clearance signs as well as multiple equipment violations. No injuries were reported.
- Surveillance cameras showed a man in the back yard of a Cathedral Avenue home checking a cottage door. In addition, a vehicle parked in the driveway was found rummaged through.
- A driver was charged with driving on Franklin Avenue with a suspended license and talking on a cellphone.
- A commercial driver for a Levittown company was charged with driving on Clinton Road at Poplar Street for failing to cover loose cargo as well as numerous equipment and safety violations.
June 10

- Police and firefighters responded to a report of a car fire on Stewart Avenue.
June 11
- A car on Meadow Street was reportedly rummaged through. There was no reported loss.
- Seven trucks were inspected at a Clinton Road checkpoint. Three were placed out of service and thirty-eight tickets were issued for various traffic and safety violations including two weight violations, six hazmat violations, and three unsecured load violations.
June 12

- A vehicle parked on 4th Street was rummaged through. No items were reported missing.
- Police and firefighters responded to Pell Terrace for a fire alarm. The cause was determined to be burnt food.
- A driver was charged with driving on Rockaway Avenue with fraudulent license plates, unregistered operation, expired inspection, and unlicensed operation.
June 13
- An officer saw the driver of a motorcycle on Franklin Avenue and Parking Field 11 driving recklessly and committing numerous traffic violations including driving on the wrong side of the road and on sidewalks before he lost control, fell, and injured his leg. The driver, a 42-year-old male was taken to a local hospital for treatment. In addition, he was charged with reckless driving and out of class operation.
- Detectives are investigating a report of a resident receiving threatening text messages.
- Officers investigated a road rage incident on Old Country Road where one of the occupants of a vehicle reportedly pointed what appeared to be a gun at the operator of another vehicle.
- Soap and sunscreen dispensers were found damaged in a Nassau Haven Park bathroom. Similar dispensers were also pulled from bathroom walls in Edgemere Park and Tullamore Parks but were not damaged.
- Officers responded to New Hyde Park Road and Stewart Avenue for a traffic light outage.
- Police and firefighters responded to Harvard Street for a boiler malfunction.
- A driver was charged with driving on Franklin Avenue at 3rd Street with a suspended license, improper plates, unregistered vehicle, and unsafe turn. Another driver was charged with driving on Hilton Avenue at 3rd Street with a suspended registration, improper plates, uninsured operation, and unregistered operation.
June 14
- Officers investigated a report of a person’s identity being stolen and used to file false unemployment claims.
June 15
- Officers responded to Cherry Valley Avenue for a report of a southbound truck fleeing the scene after striking the Cherry Valley Overpass leaving large amounts of debris in the roadway. Officers stopped the vehicle at 1st Street and charged the driver with leaving the scene of an accident, disregarding bridge clearance signs, and multiple equipment violations.
