Formula E Car Race Returns To Brooklyn: What You Need To Know

An electric car race will take over the streets of Red Hook this weekend. Here's what you should know.

RED HOOK, BROOKLYN — Brooklyn's own electric car racing tournament is back for its third year, bringing a fleet of the single-seater powerhouse to the Red Hook waterfront next weekend.

The NYC E-Prix will kick off a weekend of races on July 13 and 14 at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. The Formula E tournament, which has also been held in far-off spots like Monaco or Paris, has been holding its final round of races in the borough since 2017.

Here’s everything you need to know whether you’re going to the race, or want to avoid the slew of street closures it will bring:

What is Formula E:
Formula E is the first racing series to use single-seat electric cars that produce zero emissions. The cars can reach 140 miles per hour in under three seconds, according to the New York City Economic Development Corporation.

The tournament will include two days worth of races along with various events at the Allianz E-Village. Things will kick off when the village opens at 7 a.m. on Saturday, with the first race starting around 8:35 a.m., according to the online schedule.

The podium ceremony will end the day around 5:30 p.m. and the village will close at about 7 p.m.

Tickets:

Those who are interested in spending the day at the Allianz E-Village can buy a ticket for $12.
These tickets include access to the "best street eats" that will be set up in the "Taste Zone," along with live performances and stunts. Families can also meet Formula E racers, buy merchandise to get autographed and watch the races from a shaded viewing area near Turns 8 and 9. The village also includes a behind the scenes look at the Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy paddock and a look at the world's biggest car brands and companies.
For more serious fans, the next step up will be a $390 ticket option to get into the "Podium Lounge."
This ticket will come with all the perks of getting into the Allianz E-Village, along with added access to an exclusive elevated platform with bar-style seating, a view of the podium ceremony and the best vantage point to see the track near Turns 9, 10 and 11. It also includes complimentary food and drink in a dedicated bar and cafe seating area.
