Fish From Gowanus Not Safe To Eat, NYC's Most Obvious Signs Say
Signs warning that fishing in a Superfund site might not be good for your health are being proposed for the canal banks.

GOWANUS, NY — The federal government plans to install signs warning intrepid fishers about the dangers of eating a dinner caught from the filthy depths of the Gowanus Canal, the Brooklyn Paper reported.
The Environmental Protection Agency, which is overseeing the cleanup of the waterway, will install a dozens of signs near the best fishing spots around the canal after a community group asked for them, the paper reported.
"We ask that such warnings be placed in reasonably likely fishing locations and at each public-access location where people can easily make physical contact with the canal," the Gowanus Community Advisory Group wrote in the a letter to the EPA, according to the Brooklyn Paper.

While it seems obvious not to eat fish who live in a Superfund site, EPA officials previously said they found some anglers who sold excess catches to local restaurants when they had a good day.
The Gowanus Community Advisory Group asked for signs in English and Spanish go up around the canal warning of the health hazards eating the fish near the canal's sewer outfall and the Columbia Street pier in Red Hook, according to the paper.

The EPA created a draft of the sign which is being reviewed by the Gowanus Community Advisory Group before it goes up.
