RED HOOK, BROOKLYN — At its Wednesday meeting, Community Board 6 approved the city's plan to remake ballfields 5, 6, 7 and 8 at Red Hook Park into a clean and modern turf playing space.

The fields, bordered by Lorraine, Hicks, Henry and Bay Streets, were closed in 2015 after the Environmental Protection Agency found high lead levels in their soil, attributed to a former lead smelting plant on the site.

The city's $11 million restoration plan starts with removing the contaminated dirt.

The parks department expects to complete its design for the project by December. Procurement typically takes 9 months, while construction will probably last between 12 and 18 months, meaning the project will likely be completed some time in late 2018 or early 2019.
