Youth-Led Red Hook Art Project Will Tackle Climate Change And Sustainability

The winning project, which will receive $20,000 in city funding, will be chosen by a panel involving Red Hook community members.

RED HOOK, BROOKLYN — A $20,000 youth-led public art project will be coming to Red Hook, and the public process to select a winning artistic pitch officially got underway last week.

The art project, to be funded by the city's Emergency Management department, "will educate the city on the impacts of climate change while envisioning New York’s future," according to information circulated by the office of Red Hook Councilman Carlos Menchaca.

Last week's informational meeting, which took place at the Red Hook Library, will be followed by others, according to Menchaca's office. A staffer explained that at upcoming public meetings, artists will be able to pitch projects to the community. A council of judges — one that will include Red Hook locals — will make a decision on which project should move forward as early as this summer, the staffer said, with the goal of getting the project completed and in place by the fall. A website sharing more information about the selection process will also be created, according to the staffer.

Those interested in learning more about the art project can contact Menchaca's office by calling 718-439-9012, or by emailing info38@council.nyc.gov.
