BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — A relatively new slice shop in Bed-Stuy has already made its mark on the New York City pizza scene, according to a new ranking.

Sergio's Pizza — open for three years on Malcolm X Boulevard — was among the latest New York City pizza joints to earn a spot on Eater's list of the Big Apple's 29 Iconic Pizzerias, which was updated last week.
The Bed-Stuy shop is the only New York City branch of a Long Island pizzeria that first opened its doors in 1975 and now has five locations across the state, Utah and North Carolina, according to its website.

Foodies at Eater were particularly impressed with Sergio's innovations on classic pizza styles, including a garlic knot slice.
The shop, found on the corner of MacDonough Street, was one of three new additions to Eater's self-proclaimed guide to "New York's most legendary pizza."

Brooklyn spots already on the list include Roberta's in Bushwick and legendary Midwood pizzeria Di Fara. A total of 10 Brooklyn spots are on the ranking, which also includes 11 Manhattan joints, two Bronx pizzerias and three eateries in both Staten Island and Queens.
Here's a look at what the food critics had to say about Sergio's:

"Though the Bed-Stuy branch has only been open three years, the original was founded in Riverhead in 1975, and this place is a quintessential New York City neighborhood slice joint. The display of pies is especially regaling: The crusts are thinnish but still substantial, the sauce is a tad on the sweet side, and the toppings generously strewn. What makes Sergio's worth listing are some of its innovations to the genre, including a wonderful garlic knot slice that arranges the miniaturized orbs along the circumferential crust, to spectacular effect."
