Hazardous Weather Outlook in Effect For Long Island

A day after flash flooding wreaked havoc on parts of the island, strong to severe thunderstorms are possible Wednesday.

The National Weather Service has issued the following hazardous weather outlook for Long Island:

A cold front will approach and move through the area today and tonight. Showers and thunderstorms will develop out ahead of the front. Some of the storms may become strong to severe. The main threat with these storms will be damaging winds. SPC has placed the area in a slight risk for severe storms.

The threat of severe weather will increase during the afternoon. Gusty winds of 30-40 mph are possible and damaging gusts of up to 60 mph cannot be ruled out, the NWS says.

Any storms may bring brief, heavy rainfall, but rainfall is not expected to be nearly as high as Tuesday when more than four inches of rain caused flash flooding.
