School Bus Hits, Kills 78-year-old Pedestrian In Nassau

BREAKING: The school bus driver was removed from service following the deadly crash, according to a report.

GREAT NECK, NY — Police are investigating after a school bus hit and killed a pedestrian Monday evening in Great Neck.

A 78-year-old man was crossing Nirvana Avenue, at Middle Neck Road, around 6:30 p.m. Monday when he was hit by a school bus, Nassau County police said.

The 60-year-old woman who was driving the bus tried to turn off Middle Neck Road onto Nirvana Avenue when the man was hit, police said. The pedestrian suffered multiple trauma injuries. A doctor declared him dead at a hospital.

No one else was hurt. The name of the pedestrian wasn't immediately released.

Patch has reached out to Townes Bus Corp., the company that employed the school bus driver, and will update when we hear back.

Robert Quinn, a spokesman for Townes Bus Corp., told Newsday the bus driver was removed from service and the company is cooperating with investigators.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim and everyone affected by this tragedy," he said.
