Severe Storms Possible On Long Island: When, What To Expect

The first rain in two weeks could be accompanied by damaging winds and hail. See the latest forecast.

LONG ISLAND, NY — Severe thunderstorms are possible for Long Island the rest of Wednesday with damaging wind gusts being the main threat, the National Weather Service says.

The chance of storms will be the highest from about 9 p.m. to midnight on the island. A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for Nassau County and western Suffolk County.

Hail and even an isolated tornado are a possibility, but the strongest storms are expected to remain north and west of New York City, where a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 10 p.m.

There's a 20-30 percent chance of severe storms on Long Island, the weather service says.

The full forecast:

Wednesday Night- Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 3am. Some of the storms could produce small hail and gusty winds. Increasing clouds, with a low around 64. Southwest wind 8 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Thursday- Mostly cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 82. Northwest wind 8 to 13 mph.

Thursday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 55. North wind around 8 mph.

Friday- A 50 percent chance of rain, mainly after 3pm. Increasing clouds, with a high near 66. Northeast wind 10 to 16 mph.

Friday Night- Rain. Low around 50. East wind 14 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Saturday- Rain likely, mainly before 9am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 65. Breezy. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Saturday Night- Mostly cloudy, with a low around 51.

Sunday- Partly sunny, with a high near 67.

Sunday Night- Mostly cloudy, with a low around 51.

Memorial Day- Mostly sunny, with a high near 72.

Monday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 55.
