The temperature hit 90 degrees on Long Island Friday and it will be steamy once again on Saturday, but along with the heat will come the chance of severe thunderstorms.

After some morning sunshine on Saturday, a cold front will approach from the northwest, the National Weather Service say. This will lead to showers and thunderstorms developing for the afternoon and early evening.

There is a slight risk that some of the storms may become severe across the area, capable of producing strong gusty winds, lightning, hail and brief heavy rainfall, the NWS said in a hazardous weather outlook issued for the region.

The highest chance of storms on the island will be between 5-8 p.m.

"The fast pace of the storms alone can contribute to wind gusts strong enough to knock over poorly rooted trees, break large tree limbs and cause sporadic power outages," AccuWeather Meteorologist Bill Deger said.

Thunderstorms will also be possible on Sunday as things cool down to the lower-80s.
