TELL US: Should Chickening Be Permitted?

A Village of Great Neck family was disappointed in April when they told to get rid of their barnyard pets.

Albert and Stella Basal were keeping six chickens in their backyard, according to the Great Neck Record, which drew the complaints of neighbors, and a summons. A hearing was held by Village trustees, and the law banning chickens, or any pet that cause a "nuisance," was upheld.

It's unlucky for the Basals that their backyard wasn't located just a few miles west, across New York City lines where raising hens is a totally legal practice. "Chickening," as it is called, has become a trend of sorts. Several social groups have cropped up across the City, such as Just Food City Chicken Meetup NYC.

The Village of Great Neck's Board of Trustees doesn't want to see the trend manifest itself in the Village. Would you? Tell us in the comments section.
