White Christmas 2017: Here Are The Chances For Long Island

Forecasters have predicted how likely your dreams are to come true.

Did the snow last weekend have you dreaming of a white Christmas? Forecasters say the winter fantasy might just come true – though the chances aren't in your favor.

There's about a 13 to 17 percent chance of waking up to a winter wonderland scene on Christmas on Long Island, but it depends on the area, according to an interactive map from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association.

The map shows historical probability for a snow depth of at least one inch of snow in certain areas:

  • Mineola— 13 percent
  • Islip— 14 percent
  • Patchogue— 17 percent
  • Riverhead— 16 percnt
  • Bridgehampton— 15 percent

For better chances of a white Christmas, head to upstate New York – it's a pretty sure thing in the Adirondacks with 87 percent probability at Lake Placid.

NOAA's map is based on the average temperatures of the past three-decades, precipitation and other climate variables. On the map below, the darkest gray areas show the lowest probability for a white Christmas and the white areas show where the chances are the greatest.

Accuweather.com's long-range forecast for Long Island doesn't look good for a white Christmas, either. There is a "wintry mix" in the forecast for the 22nd, but it looks like the holiday will be brown.
