Child Grazed By Bullet In E Harlem Shooting: Police

The child was grazed by a bullet intended for a teenager who was also shot. A 16-year-old has been arrested in connection to the shooting.

EAST HARLEM, NY — A 7-year-old was hospitalized Thursday after being grazed by a bullet when gunshots rang out on an East Harlem corner near the Park Avenue viaduct, an NYPD spokesperson said.

The child was grazed in the leg by a bullet intended for a 19-year-old, who was also shot, when a gunman opened fire on East 102nd Street and Park Avenue shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday, police said. Cops arrested a 16-year-old in connection with the shooting on Friday, police said.

The teen is charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal weapons possession, police said.

Both victims were hospitalized and are expected to live, according to the report. Police have not made any arrests in connection to the shooting.

New York City has seen a spike in shootings this summer. The number of shootings more than tripled last week in comparison to the same week in 2019 and in May the number of shootings jumped 64 percent, NYPD data show.
