Harlem Shop Creates Market To Support Local Artists During Crisis
A Harlem gift shop has begun hosting a weekend sidewalk market, showcasing works by Black creatives and featuring live jazz performances.
HARLEM, NY — A Harlem gift shop trying to survive the pandemic has shifted its business model in an effort to help fellow Black artists and entrepreneurs, opening a sidewalk market to showcase wears and entertain the neighborhood.
NiLu, a gift shop run by husband and wife Mark Pinn and Katrina Parris, has begun hosting a "Harlem Village Market" each weekend outside its Central Harlem storefront.
Each Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m., the market features a handful of musicians, artists or other creatives, seeking to support the participants and brighten the street scene for Harlem residents spending their weekends strolling around their neighborhood.

"As we battle back from Covid we felt a need to create an opportunity for local makers, artists and musicians to rise with us," Pinn said in a news release.

Pinn and Parris don't charge any fees or commissions for those who participate in the market. "We believe now is the time to pay it forward," Pinn said.

Recent artists featured included clothing designers Imani Lia Fashions and Junn, as well as the chocolate maker Truffolie. Each day's market also features a jazz band playing outside.
"Our community has struggled this year," Parris said. "We hope these pop-up events are able to bring back some of the things we’ve been missing, all while supporting the artists and makers that make Harlem what it is."
NiLu Gift Boutique is located at 191 Malcolm X Blvd., between 119th and 120th streets. Its weekend market is open 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
