HARLEM, NY — Harlem Stage is planning a virtual fundraiser featuring archived performances, live musical guests and special appearances from some of the venue's famous supporters to help the performing arts center survive the economic toll of the new coronavirus outbreak.

Harlem Stage will hold its fundraiser on Monday, May 18, the venue's executives said in a statement. The event — simply titled "Celebrating Harlem Stage" — will be streamed live on Harlem Stage's Facebook and Instagram accounts. Harlem Stage was forced to cancel its annual spring gala due to New York State's stay-at-home order.

The performing arts venue has been shut down since March, when theaters and other businesses such as bars and nightclubs were ordered closed throughout the state in an effort to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

"The closure of performing arts venues due to COVID-19 has been difficult for artists, administrators, stakeholders and for audiences. This online celebration will showcase our mission to a wider audience and hopefully raise the critical funds needed to continue to support visionary artists of color whose daring works inspire and uplift our community and our world," said Patricia Cruz, Executive Director of Harlem Stage, said in a statement.

Celebrating Harlem Stage will be hosted by Broadway performers LaChanze and Celia Rose Gooding with actor Tamara Tunie. Musical guests planned for the event include MacArthur Genius Jason Moran and jazz singer José James. Celebrities such as MSNBC host Joy Reid and actors Clare Danes and Hugh Dancy also plan to make special appearances.
