New Video Shows Man Stealing Thousand-Dollar Kenny Scharf Mural from East River Park
The grand larceny, which occurred back on Aug. 20, was the second time a mural had been stolen from the location.
EAST HARLEM, NY — Police released new footage of a man wanted for stealing a 60-foot-long mural designed by artist Kenny Scharf from East River Park. The NYPD said it is also looking for a woman who was involved in the theft.
The incident, which happened on Aug. 20, was actually the second time a piece of Scharf artwork was stolen from the location. Both works were worth thousands of dollars. The man is described as white, 25 to 35 years old, and wearing a multi-colored shirt, black shorts and sandals. The woman, who is not seen in the video, is only described as having blonde hair.
Police are also looking for a Honda Element, which the suspects stuffed the mural in and drove away at about 8 p.m. that Saturday.

A first mural designed by Scharf was stolen during the weekend of June 25-26, a spokeswoman from Friends of the East River Esplanade told Patch in late August. They recommissioned a new mural, which was then stolen by the man in the video.
The organization did not commission a third piece of artwork.

The installation was temporary and was slated to be taken down sometime in the fall, the spokeswoman said. The group had hoped the artwork would start a public conversation about beautifying East Harlem's section of the esplanade.
