SEE: Crowd Hurls Bottles At NYPD Cars In Harlem

Partygoers threw glass bottles at police cars responding to a shots fired report in Harlem. Police unions blamed the mayor for the unrest.

HARLEM, NY — Police investigating reports of shots fired in Harlem early Sunday morning withstood a rain of glass bottles hurled by dozens of people partying on the street, according to videos uploaded to social media.

Police vehicles blared their sirens at the intersection of Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard and West 132nd Street early Sunday morning — attempting to disperse a large crowd on the block — when the revelers retaliated by launching glass bottles, according to the video. The NYPD vehicles are forced to retreat down the street in reverse as the crowd continues to hurl projectiles and celebrate in the middle of the block.

Cops arrived at the scene while investigating a ShotSpotter report — a surveillance system that detects possible gunshots and automatically alerts nearby officers — an NYPD spokesman said. Police recovered "several spent shell casings and two fired bullets" from the scene but concluded that the shots didn't result in injuries. Shootings have surged in New York City in recent weeks compared to the same period of time in 2019.

Police dispersed the crowd of about 500 people by 6 a.m. Sunday morning, an NYPD spokesman said.

"This is a deeply troubling incident. It is an unprovoked assault on our cops. It continues as they attempt to deescalate. We have clear images of some of the worst perpetrators. We are offering an award for their arrest," NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said in a statement.

Police unions took to social media to share the video and criticize Mayor Bill de Blasio and city elected officials that have called for cuts to the NYPD for fostering a dangerous environment for cops.

"This is what a 'light touch' looks like: Police officers responding to a shots fired job in Harlem last night were met with this. @NYCMayor, @NYCSpeakerCojo and company should be held responsible for surrendering our city," the Police Benevolent Union said in a statement on Twitter.

The Sergeants Benevolent Association also weighed in on the video: "DO NOT visit NYC & DO NOT encourage friends & family to visit. The city is dangerous thanks to our elected officials see for yourself."

Council Speaker Corey Johnson has spoken in favor of cutting the NYPD budget — saying that the city should consider disbanding the department altogether — while New Yorkers calling for defunding the police take to the streets daily and occupy city hall.
