24-Year-Old Man Critically Injured In LIE Crash

Police say his car rear-ended a box truck before veering off the road early Friday.

HAUPPAUGE, NY — A 24-year-old man is in critical condition following a crash on the Long Island Expressway early Friday, police said.

According to Suffolk police, Derrick Louis was driving a 2016 Nissan Altima east on the LIE, west of Exit 56, in Hauppauge when his car struck the back of a 2020 Freightliner box truck at about 3:10 a.m. The Altima veered off the road, into the woods and then struck a tree.

Louis, of Westbury, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was listed in critical condition. His female passenger, 24, was treated at Stony Brook for minor injuries. The 33-year-old man driving the box truck was not injured.

The Hauppauge Fire Department helped free Louis from the car, according to a post on its Facebook page.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.
