HAUPPAUGE, NY — Two good Samaritans saved a drunken woman from a burning car after she crashed into a pole Wednesday night in Hauppauge, Suffolk police said. Melanie Lhommedieu, 45, of St. James, was arrested following her rescue.

Lhommedieu was driving a 2009 BMW southbound on Wheeler Road, at the intersection of Marlo Lane, when she crossed a double yellow line and crashed into a pole, causing her car to catch fire around 10:05 p.m., police said. Two men in a vehicle driving behind the BMW saw the crash and stopped to help, police said. They safely pulled Lhommedieu from the BMW, police said. There were no injuries.

Lhommedieu was charged with DWI, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and multiple traffic violations. She was held overnight at the Fourth Precinct and was scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday.
