Police ID Pedestrian Killed In Islandia Car Crash

A man got out of his car to help another driver whose car stalled in the road. Both were hit by a woman, and one was killed, police say.

Updated 1:45 p.m.: ISLANDIA, NY — Federico Oviedo, 57, of Bay Shore, was identified as the man who was killed on Motor Parkway in Islandia, police said.

Original story: ISLANDIA, NY — A man was killed in a car crash Saturday night in Islandia. Suffolk County detectives are investigating.

An 18-year-old Bay Shore man was driving a 1998 Nissan Pathfinder westbound on Motor Parkway between Hoffman Lane and Veterans Memorial Highway when the car became disabled in the road, police said. A 57-year-old Bay Shore man driving a 2003 Toyota minivan stopped behind the Nissan to offer help. As the two men walked behind the minivan to remove tools from the trunk, they were hit by a 2001 Dodge Durango driven by a 22-year-old woman around 6:20 p.m., police said.

The 57-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. The Nissan driver was brought to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The cars were impounded for a safety check. Detectives ask anyone with information on the crash to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.
