Long Island Weather: Pre-Halloween Coastal Storm Looms

A hazardous weather outlook is in effect. We've got the latest on the potential impacts to the area.

A powerful coastal storm continues to eye Long Island during the second half of the weekend and into Monday, the National Weather Service says.

A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for the region.

"The potential exists for a strong cold front to approach from the west, while an intensifying storm moves up the coast, Sunday into Sunday night. This storm could produce heavy rain capable of causing areal and small stream flooding during this time frame. Strong winds will also be possible across the area."

The sun returns Friday with skies clearing out from west to east. Temperatures will also return to more seasonable levels to close out the work week.

Temperatures will begin to turn warmer into Saturday as the first half of the weekend will be mainly dry, the NWS says, but clouds will begin to increase Saturday afternoon and evening in advance of a storm system that will impact the region during the second half of the weekend. Heavy rain and gusty winds are in the forecast for Sunday.

Around 1-3 inches of rainfall with locally higher amounts are possible, especially in any thunderstorms that may develop.

The strongest winds are expected Monday morning when there will be the potential for gusts of 40-50 mph, the NWS says. The winds will gradually subside into Monday night.

The potential for any coastal flooding will need to be monitored closely, the NWS says.

"A brief storm surge could inundate low-lying coastal areas from Long Island to Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts," AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Elliot Abrams says.
