Snow Threat Pops Back Into Long Island Forecast

A major winter storm is heading for the East Coast. We'll let you know what it means for Long Island.

Long Island may see some snow from a major storm system that will track across the Midwest toward the East Coast late this weekend.

The brunt of the storm is expect to stay well to the south of the area. Parts of North Carolina and Virginia may see more than a foot of snow.

The National Weather Service says there's a 30 percent chance of light snow on Long Island early Monday.

"Overall consensus points to dry weather or a glancing blow at best with light precip briefly, but this obviously needs to be monitored, noting any trends in the guidance," the weather service said in a Wednesday night forecast discussion about the New York area.

AccuWeather meteorologists believe there is a chance that the northern edge of the snow may brush Long Island.

At this time, the chance of accumulating snow reaching at least part of the Washington, D.C., area is more likely than snow reaching Midtown Manhattan, according to AccuWeather.

“This is not the type of storm where snow will continue to advance northward to northern New England,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brian Wimer said.
