Snow Threatens Long Island New Year's Eve Weekend
There's a large amount of uncertainty in the forecast this far out, but a nor'easter is possible on the final weekend of 2017.

The final week of 2017 on Long Island promises to be piercingly cold, but details on a potential New Year's Eve weekend snowstorm are still coming into focus.
As far as the cold goes, let's put it this way: don't go outside this week unless you are wearing several layers of clothing. Temperatures are not expected to rise above freezing at any point. Thursday will likely be the coldest day of the week with a high (yes, a high) near 21 degrees and a low around 10, according to the National Weather Service.
It should at least remain dry until Friday. That's when things get a bit dicey. Forecast models show the potential for light to moderate snow on the island Friday and Saturday. There remains a large amount of uncertainty in the forecast, so the NWS is currently pegging the odds of snow at 30 percent for both days.

The interaction between a storm in the South and a storm that will move across the Midwest will determine how the Northeast will be impacted Friday into Saturday, according to AccuWeather.
“The potential for a more substantial snowfall will be possible across the mid-Atlantic and Northeast if the northern storm links up with the southern storm,” AccuWeather Long Range Meteorologist Max Vido says.

Lesser impacts are possible should the two storms fail to interact and the southern storm tracks eastward out to sea. However, a stronger interaction of the two could form a nor'easter along or just off the Atlantic coast.
“Timing will be essential to whether or not this region has a significant winter storm,” Vido says.
