HAUPPAUGE, NY — A teenager motorcyclist was seriously injured in a Hauppauge crash Tuesday morning after Suffolk police said he was trying to drive away from an officer.

Michael Occhino, 17, of Deer Park, was seen speeding on a 1999 Kawasaki motorcycle by a Highway Patrol officer who was pulling out of a parking lot on Route 347 west, police said. The officer tried to pull over Occhino at a traffic signal at Route 347 and Townline Road, police said. Occhino drove away from the officer, police said, and went through a red light. The officer then continued west on Route 347 in the direction Occhino fled and saw him rear-end a 2019 Ford box truck a quarter-mile west of Route 454 around 10:20 a.m., police said.

Occhino was brought to Stony Brook University Hospital in serious condition. The man driving the box truck was not injured.
