A lot happened in 2017, both nationally and locally. It's hard to single out just one story that captured our readers this year. So instead, we picked the five stories that our Levittown Patch readers were most interested in.
Levittown School District Removes Holiday Names From Calendar
The most popular story of the year, by far, was this one from August, when the school district announced it was removing the names of holidays from school calendars. The reaction from the community was swift, and the district quickly decided to reprint the calendars with the names added.
Levittown Murder: 'Their Intent Was To Kill Her'
In September, the community was gripped by the grisly murder of an 83-year-old Loraine Pizzichemi and the attack on her grandson. According to police, the two killers went to the house with the intention to rob it. Pizzichemi's 24-year-old grandson, who also lived there, was selling marijuana out of the house, and two felt they were ripped off after a drug sale, police said. Police said their intent was to steal whatever money and drugs were in the house.

Nassau Man Indicted On Charges Of Beating Dog With Shovel
Another grisly story from 2017. In February, 56-year-old Michael Gallagher was seen by neighbors beating his family's dog with a shovel after stuffing it into a garbage bag. Neighbors stopped him, and the dog was still alive. It was taken to a vet, but unfortunately had to be euthanized because of the severity of its injuries.
Levittown Pair Charged In Nassau Gas Station Gunpoint Robberies
In June, Nassau County police arrested a pair from Levittown in connection with two different armed robberies from September 2016. Nicholas Rom, 21, of Springtime Lane, and Joelle Sessions, 28, of Glazer Lane, were arrested and charged for robberies in Wantagh and Levittown.

Hit-And-Run Driver Kills Levittown Teen
The community was shocked in early November to hear about the death of 18-year-old Taranjit Parmar, a student at Adelphi University. Parmar was killed after getting into a fender bender on Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown when the man she was in the accident with drove away and ran her over. On Dec. 23, Nassau police arrested and charged 31-year-old Daniel Coppolo, of Deer Park, with Parmar's murder.
