Keep Your Pets Safe During Winter Storms
The SPCA has tips to keep your pets safe and healthy during times like this. And they're easy to follow.

As the first snowstorm of the year batters Long Island, it's important to remember that humans aren't the only ones who get cold outside. It's important to consider your pets when dealing with winter weather. Luckily, there are a few easy things that pet owners can do to make their furry friends safe and comfortable during bad winter weather.
First and foremost, pet owners should bring their pets inside during bad storms. If it's unsafe for people to be outside, it's unsafe for pets, too. Even outdoor cats should be brought in during a snowstorm.
The Nassau County SPCA offers a few more tips, too:

- Don't let your dog off the leash after heavy snowfall. Dogs can lose their scent during winter storms and easily become lost. Deep snow cover can confuse a pet and cover their familiar scent landmarks. It is easier, and more dangerous, for your pet to be lost in snowy weather so keep an eye on them at all times when outdoors.
- Keep a pet emergency kit and supplies handy with items such as medical records, water, pet food and medications, and pet first aid supplies.
- Clean off your dog's paws with a moist washcloth after going outside. Snow-melting salt can be very painful to dogs' feet and can make them ill when ingested.
- Have a coat and booties ready for any dog that needs them. Be ready to protect your pets from very strong wind and cold.
Just remember: if you're cold, your pets probably are, too. So keep them inside where it's warm and curl up with them as you enjoy the snow.
