The Levittown Fire Department said good bye to honorary chief, ex-commissioner and 57-year member Thomas Joseph Cuff Jr., who fought for better safety standards and greater recognition of the sacrifices made by volunteer firefighters, and devoted his life to the fire service. He was 86.
He first was a member of the Garden City Fire Department before joining the Levittown Fire Department. Cuff served in fire departments and organizations for more than 60 years, and was elected president of the Firemen's Association of the State of New York in 2008. He also served on a fire service occupational safety committee of the National Fire Protection Association, fire officials said.
