LI Student’s Black Lives Matter Theme Wins PTA National Contest

LEVITTOWN, NY — A General Douglas MacArthur High School sophomore from Levittown inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement has been selected as the 2022-2023 Parent Teacher Association Reflections Theme Search Contest winner for his phrase, “Show your voice!”

Jason Yevin’s phrase, “Show your voice!,” will be the next National PTA Reflections theme that will inspire student creativity in grades K-12 across the United States and he will receive $100 from the National PTA, according to a district news release. Yevin came up with his “Show Your Voice!” phrase after reflecting on the Black Lives Matter protests and mask wearing in 2020 during a brainstorming session in ceramics teacher Deja Gomes-Vance’s class, the release stated.

“I think it’s great,” stated Gomes-Vance. “Jason is a wonderful student and this recognition could not have happened to a better kid.”

The National PTA, which selects one theme idea for its reflections contest each year, challenges students from across the country to create original works of art — on anything from dance choreography and film production to literature, music composition, photography and visual arts.
