Long Island GameStops Could Be Shuttered As Retailer Plans Store Closings
With sales falling, the video game retailer is planning to close up to 3 percent of its storefronts.

As sales of physical copies of video games fall, retail giant GameStop announced that it planned to close up to 3 percent of its storefronts this year, and many locations on Long Island could be on the chopping block.
GameStop operates dozens of stores on Long Island. But the company reported that sales fell in 2016 by 8 percent. The loss is due to many factors, but highest among them is the trend of consumers purchasing digital copies of video games instead of going to stores to buy physical copies.
The retailer has not announced what stores will be closed yet, but did say that it plans to close 2 to 3 percent of its stores. GameStop operates more than 4,300 stores in the United States, and those stores are most likely to be impacted.

And with Long Island's high concentration of GameStops, it's likely that one or more stores here could be shuttered.
However, even though it plans to close its game stores, the company plans to open 35 new Collectibles stores this year. No locations have been announced.
