Used Fireworks Reignite, Cause Fire That Damaged Levittown Home

LEVITTOWN, NY — Used fireworks reignited near a Levittown home on Monday, damaging part of the building in the process.

According to police, a fire broke out around 9:50 p.m. at a home on Boat Lane. A resident of the home told police he put the remnants of fireworks in a garbage can on the side of the home. They later reignited, damaging the home and a neighbor's fence.

The Levittown Fire Department responded and put out the fire. No one was injured.

Used fireworks can reignite due to heat contained within the fireworks. Used fireworks should be soaked in water before being disposed to ensure that they are completely inactive.

“Last night, there was a fire in a residential area in Levittown that was suspected to be caused by firework remnants. Luckily there were no injuries due to the fire, but this is a reminder that fireworks are extremely dangerous and should only be used by professionals," Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said in a statement. "Thank you to Nassau County Police Department, Nassau County Fire Marshal and the Levittown Fire Department for their swift work in responding to the scene and extinguishing the fire. Residents are reminded that they can report illegal fireworks by calling 911 and can report firework sales by emailing FireworksSales@nassaucountyny.gov”
