As Vaccinations Ramp Up, Nassau's Coronavirus Numbers Fall
The county is still urging residents, especially senior citizens, to get vaccinated.
NASSAU COUNTY, NY — As vaccination rates continue to rise, the number of new coronavirus cases in Nassau County keeps falling, though the numbers are still higher than the low they hit last summer.
According to data from New York State, Nassau County had 12,359 positive cases of coronavirus and 89 deaths from the virus in April. That was a drop from March, which saw 19,577 cases and 137 deaths.
In total, Nassau County has recorded 181,002 positive cases since the pandemic began last March, and 3,153 deaths.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said that, as of today, the county's positivity rate dropped to 1.64 percent, which is below the state average of 1.76 percent.
"In just one month, COVID-19 hospitalizations in Nassau have declined by 63 percent overall," Curran said. "Let’s keep getting shots into arms so we can save more lives and get back to normal."

The first days of May were also the first time since last October that Nassau say a string of days with fewer than 200 cases. Oct. 25 was the last day the county recorded less than 100 new cases in a day.
Curran urged residents — especially seniors, who are more susceptible to the virus — to get vaccinated. According to Curran, 82.6 percent of Nassau residents who are 65 or older have now been vaccinated.
