Wind Chill Advisory Issued For Long Island

Check out the latest hour-by-hour forecast, plus the next chances of snow.

If you must venture outside this weekend, make sure you are wearing several layers of clothing along with a hat and gloves.

That’s the message from the National Weather Service, which has issued a wind chill advisory for Long Island spanning from 4 p.m. Saturday until noon Sunday.

The temperature will approach zero overnight Saturday into Sunday morning and wind chill temperatures are expected to sink to 20 degrees below zero.

“The frigid conditions will be dangerous to those venturing outside,” the wind chill advisory says. “Prolonged exposure may cause frostbite.”

It will be a bitter cold weekend, but temperatures will rebound into the mid-30s on Monday and may top 50 on Tuesday.

As far as snow goes, scattered snow showers are possible across Long Island Friday night into Saturday morning. Just a dusting is likely for most of the island, but the East End could potentially see 1-2 inches of snow, the NWS says.

Snow will be back in the forecast on Monday afternoon, but as of now, the NWS is not projecting any accumulations. The snow is expected to turn to rain Monday night and then Long Island could get drenched with 1-2 inches of rain through Tuesday.

The National Weather Service offered the following tips for staying safe this weekend:

* NEVER VENTURE OUTDOORS WITHOUT WEARING GLOVES...A HAT AND SEVERAL LAYERS OF CLOTHING. WIND CHILL VALUES LATE SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY MORNING COULD LEAD TO FROSTBITE IN LESS THAN 30 MINUTES IF PROPER PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN.

* RUN WATER AT A TRICKLE AND KEEP CABINET DOORS OPEN TO PREVENT PIPES FROM FREEZING.

* NEVER USE A STOVE OR OVEN TO HEAT YOUR HOME OR USE AN OPEN FLAME TO MELT FROZEN PIPES. MANY HOUSE FIRES RESULT FROM THESE PRACTICES.

* CHECK TIRE PRESSURE AND YOUR CAR BATTERY. BE SURE YOUR CAR HAS A WINTER SAFETY KIT THAT INCLUDES A BLANKET...WARM CLOTHES AND GLOVES IN CASE YOUR CAR BREAKS DOWN OR BECOMES STRANDED.

* TAKE EXTRA STEPS TO KEEP YOUR PETS WARM AND KNOW THEIR LIMITS TO COLD.
