Year in Review: Levittown’s Top Stories of 2013

From the grand opening of Long Island’s first-ever Walmart Market, to the tragic passing of an Island Trees teacher, here are the top 10 stories we covered in 2013:

Cops: Levittown Man Had Sexual Relationship with 12-Year-Old Boy - A Levittown man was arrested in June after police said he had a five-month long sexual relationship with a 12-year-old boy.

Police: Levittown Man Killed by Drunk Driver - A Levittown man was killed after his car was struck by a drunk driver on the Long Island Expressway in July.

Island Trees Teacher Passes Away at 33 - In March, the Island Trees School District released a statement on fourth grade teacher Yu-Chuan Chen Leary, also known as "May May," who passed away at the age of 33. 

Levittown Resident Charged With Multiple Robberies - An armed robbery of a Wantagh convenience store led to the arrest of two men who were later charged with committing numerous other robberies throughout Nassau County earlier this year, including the armed robbery of Gold Buyers in Levittown.  

Car Found Fully Covered in Post-it Notes - Back in March, a car parked on Squirrel Lane was found fully covered in colored Post-it notes.

Now Open in Levittown: LI's First-Ever Walmart Market - The company held a ribbon cutting ceremony in October at 3335 Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown, to celebrate the opening of the store. 

Police Arrest Two Women in Levittown for Prostitution - Nassau County Police said they arrested two women for prostitution on Center Lane in Levittown on May 1 - just three weeks after arresting a woman on the same charges at the same location.    

Displaced Family's Missing Dog Found After 41 Days - A dog that was missing for 41 days in Levittown was reunited with its owner. The story resonated with the local community and a Facebook group "Bring Clyde Home" was created to help find the family's pet.

Teens Arrested in Levittown Pools Vandalism - Nassau County Police reported the arrests of five teenagers who they say are responsible for the vandalism of seven Levittown pools.  

Levittown Man Killed in Sunrise Highway Crash - Police said Jason Delauro had pulled his 2005 Honda motorcycle into the median when a westbound BMW, driven by Gregory Dean, drifted out of the left lane into the median, striking Delauro. Delauro, 32, of Levittown, was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Parents, Superintendent Blast Common Core: ‘It’s Hurting Our Children’ - A meeting on the Common Core was held at Levittown Hall in October. The meeting was created by Marianne Adrian, a Levittown parent. Guest speakers included Jeanette Deutermann, founder of Long Island Opt-Out, Dr. Joe Rella, Superintendent of Schools in Comsewogue, Yvonne Gasperino, Founder of Stop the Common Core in NYS, and Marla Kilfoyle, a parent and General Manager of BATs.

Levittown Teacher Credited With Saving Student’s Life - Susan Graham was recognized at a November board of education meeting, after Graham performed the Heimlich maneuver on a young student who was choking during a class party.

Coming Soon in Levittown: New Drive-Through Starbucks - The vacant Rayco4 building was knocked down a few months ago and will soon be replaced by a brand new drive-through Starbucks, which is expected to open in 2014.
