History: Owner surrender. O reported he has a hx of a UTI from last year and so he has only been eating wet food.

Subjective: BAR

Observed Behavior -Hissing, swatting and growling. Dilated pupils. Sedated for exam.

Evidence of Cruelty seen -No

U/G: M/N
MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, ~1 cm moist superficial wound on lower left ventrum, moist superficial wound medial left stifle
CNS: Mentation appropriate - no signs of neurologic abnormalities
Rectal: Clean externally

-Dental dz, fractured canine
-Wounds x 2
-Overweight

Prognosis: Good

Plan:
-Sedated with Telazol (100 mg/mL) 0.3 mL IM
-CBC/chem/urinalysis to Idexx, interpret tomorrow
-"Wet food only" sign on cage
-Convenia 0.7 mL SQ
-Cleaned wounds and applied TAB ointment
-Recommend ~5 lb weight loss
-Recommend dental with x-rays and extractions once placed

When you're home with him he likes to follow owner from room to room. He likes to play with balls, string and laser pointers. Smokey was fed wet Friskie's variety of flavors twice a day, once in the morning and the other at night. He is litter box trained using a hooded box with pellet litter. He will use boxes for scratching posts. During car rides Smokey will cry. When given a bath or trimming her nails Smokey will struggle to get away. Smokey enjoys being brushed and held.

Hiding in his den on approach. Hisses softly at the assessor when spoken softly. Kept interaction short to avoid escalation. Needs time to adjust.

6/30/20
Sitting upright by the front. Sniffs valerian scented toy given and starts to play with it and roll around. Gave some treats after. Petting was not attempted to have a positive interaction. Seems calmer today.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:
Smokey was resting by the front with a soft body. He engaged and greeted the assessor with tail high. Smokey ate the squeeze up treat offered. He enjoyed gentle petting along the head and back, leaning in for cheek rubs. Smokey started to play and roll around with a catnip toy given.

Smokey seems to be a social, affectionate, calm and playful cat. He might take time to adjust to his new home as he seemed agitated when arrived to the shelter. This cat is showing behavior appropriate for cat parents with either an average amount of cat experience or demonstrate a basic understanding of typical cat behavior.
